Mimbre: 

El mimbre es una fibra vegetal que se obtiene de un arbusto de la familia de los sauces y que se teje para crear muebles, cestas y otros objetos útiles. En el tejido se utiliza el tallo y las ramas de la planta, ya sea en todo su grosor para el marco o en lonjas cortadas longitudinalmente para el tejido propiamente tal.

Desde la Edad Media y hasta el Siglo XIII se mantuvo la destreza en la cestería utilizando mimbre. Al comenzar el Siglo XX el cultivo se desarrollo nuevamente en toda Europa. En la actualidad existen muy pocos países dedicados al cultivo del mimbre y a la fabricación de cestas y muebles de esta fibra.

A menudo se hace un marco de materiales más firmes, después se una un material más flexible para rellenar el marco. El mimbre es ligero pero robusto, haciéndolo una ideal y poco costosa opción para muebles que serán movidas a menudo. Es habitualmente utilizado en la relación de muebles de patio y de pórtico.

Existen referencias documentales del mimbre ya en el Antiguo Egipto. Ha sido propuesto que el uso extensivo de objetos de mimbre en la Edad del Hierro tuvo una influencia en el desarrollo de los patrones usados en el Arte Céltico. En tiempos más recientes su estética fue influida fuertemente por el movimiento de artes y oficios a finales del siglo XX.

Wicker:

The wicker is a vegetable fiber that is obtained from a bush of the willow family and that is woven to create furniture, baskets and other useful objects. In the fabric, the stem and the branches of the plant are used, either in full thickness for the frame or in slices cut longitudinally for the tissue itself.

From the Middle Ages to the thirteenth century the skill in basket weaving was maintained using wicker. At the beginning of the twentieth century the crop was developed again throughout Europe. At present there are very few countries dedicated to the cultivation of wicker and the manufacture of baskets and furniture of this fiber.

Often a frame of firmer materials is made, then a more flexible material is added to fill the frame. The wicker is light but sturdy, making it an ideal and inexpensive option for furniture that will be moved often. It is commonly used in the relationship of patio and porch furniture.

There are documentary references to the wicker already in Ancient Egypt. It has been proposed that the extensive use of wickerwork in the Iron Age had an influence on the development of the patterns used in the Celtic Art. In more recent times its aesthetic was strongly influenced by the arts and crafts movement at the end of the 20th century.
